would avoid the Lhasa Apso. It is very hard to keep them clean and tidy unless you bathe them frequently and groom their hair daily. They are cute and friendly and also good watchdogs, yes. If you have the time to take care of the hair, and the patience to train them (they can be stubborn), then it's ok. Otherwise, get a Papillon instead. Their hair is said to be easy to groom and they are one of the 10 smartest dog breeds.
